The Accademia dei Lincei is one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious scientific institutions, located in the Palazzo Corsini on Via Della Lungara in Rome, Italy.
Established by Federico Cesi in the Papal States in 1603, the Academy was named after the lynx, an animal whose keen eyesight symbolizes the powers of observation required by science.
Galileo was the intellectual center of the Academy and adopted “Galileo Linceo” as his signature.
“The Lincei did not long survive the death of Cesi in 1630. Its founder and patron disappeared in 1651.
It was revived again during the nineteenth century, first in the Vatican and later in Italy.
The Pontifical Academy of Sciences, founded in 1847, claims this heritage as the Accademia Pontificia dei Nuovi Lincei (“Pontifical Academy of New Traits”), originating from the first two incarnations of the Academy.

The first Accademia dei Lincei was established in 1603 by Federico Cesi, an aristocrat from Umbria who was passionately interested in natural history, especially botany.
Cesi founded the Accademia dei Lincei with three friends: the Dutch physician Johannes van Check (Giovanni Ecchio in Italian) and two colleagues from Umbria, the mathematician Francesco Stelluti and the polymath Anastasio de Filiis.
The literary and antiquarian emphasis distinguishes “Lincei” from the host of Italian academies of the 16th and 17th centuries.
