Career Options and Opportunities in Arts and Humanities
Before I start this article, I want you to read this disclaimer;
“No subject or field of study is superior to the other. Every career is needed, in one way or the other and this article is in no way, trying to challenge that.”
Good. You might have heard people mock arts and repeatedly say that ‘ there is no job there. Employers are not searching for brains in art, the smart guys do science…etc.’
Now let me start by saying that is a big fat lie. And I’ll prove it with a little story.

Art Or Science?
“ While I was in secondary school and it was time to choose your subjects, our VP came out and said ‘Arts & social science to the left, technical student (engineering etc) to the centre and pure science students to the right.’
Guess what happened? You guessed right.
A little number of fewer than fifteen students (myself included) moved to the left, less than twenty-five students moved to the centre and over a hundred students move to the right.
I almost laughed because I saw people, who were raw art talents jump to the right too. Back to the story.
“ After three weeks, we wrote our first continuous assessment test and my class, art class which has less than fifteen students suddenly exploded to forty students. Forty. They found out that they couldn’t cope with the physics and other core science subjects, so their grades were dying, when they transferred to art, their grades suddenly started sparkling with As & Bs.”
I know you might be checking this article out because you are confused and wondering if it is worth it to chase your dreams or just give up and follow a traditional career, and I’m telling you, it is worth it.
Apart from the fact that you would be better in your field and happier, have you seen how much they pay these guys?!
Currently, people that work in the field of Arts and Humanities are topping the chart as one of the highest-paid people in the world!
And yes, in arts, everybody does not have to be a fashion designer or a painter, there are tons of career opportunities available in Arts and Humanities and I’m going to introduce you to the many I can, starting with Arts.
Career Opportunities in Arts 2022:
Arts is a wide field, a means for people to communicate without necessary using their voice but with a combination of creativity, passion and drive.
Below are multiple career opportunities open for students who major in Arts;
- Art conservator:
These guys are not common, they are a special breed with a high passion for artistic pieces in form of paintings, textiles, botanicals, and skeletons.
Their main job is to restore or maintain the above items for storage, sale or exhibit. You know those paintings you see in museums, dinosaur skeletons etc, are being maintained to prevent them from decay and damage by art conservators.
And they make from $40,000 – $70,000.
If you like to preserve things, and you have a passion for artefacts and rate objects, you should check this career opportunity out.
- Archivist:
These are the gatekeepers of information. If you are wondering how the Bible survived thousands of years, while being original till the 21st century, you should be speaking to an archivist.
If you are also wondering how companies like Macdonald, Victoria’s Secret and other big companies whose founders died a long time ago are still functioning according to the original brand vision, you should search for an archivist.
Although not a popular job, these are the record keepers of society’s memory. They preserve information in tiger original form.
These guys make from $30,000 – $77,000 a year. Remind me what I am doing in accounting again?
- Social Media Manager:
We are currently in a social media economy. Businesses and brands are scrambling to gain an online presence and would pay just about anything for experts to curate it for them.
You’re probably thinking how relevant a degree here is when everybody can do it without a degree. To get a job in this field, it is easier with a school certificate than just plain skill.
The average salary for a Social Media Manager in the US is $71,216.
- Landscape Architect:
How do people achieve having Pinterest-like houses?
Through this guys!
With the hunger for aesthetically pleasing housing, everyone is looking for aesthetic value. They want their houses and properties to look beautiful and durable.
These Landscape architects are different because they design the houses to be pleasing to the eye. Unlike regular architects that design the structure of a house, landscape architects design attractive and functional public parks, gardens, playgrounds, residential areas, college campuses, and public spaces.
The average salary is $78,000.

Career Opportunities in Humanities 2022:
Humanities are academic disciplines that involve the study of different aspects of human society and culture. Like the name, it is a socially driven course, that deals with human behaviour.
Humanities is all about studying the human condition revolving around socio-economic and political scenarios.
Humanities can be grouped into fields, or departments, (just like business has many facets like accounting, commerce, finance etc)
Fields of studies like;
- Broadcasting / Film / Video
- Fashion / Textile Art
- Fine Arts / Visual Arts / Graphic Design
- Museums / Libraries
- Performing Arts / Music.
Now, I would break down those fields into various career opportunities.
- Psychologist/ Therapist/ Life Coach:
With how crazy life is becoming, it is no surprise that people are beginning to prioritise their mental health and well-being more and more.
And to do that, they need certified and professional help. This is currently a big industry and it is made up of highly skilled professionals who must be school certified.
This group of people earn over $300,000 a year. Despite the attractiveness of the pay, this is a fairly difficult industry to break into.
- Biolinguist
This is a science type of art. Biolinguist refers to the study of the language of a species, where it came from and how it has evolved.
While it does not deal with chemistry and mixing of substances and all, it comes from the more natural, human angle. It studies people and their languages.
This is also, a very rare and high classed skill and they earn an average of $83,000 a year.
