Brief Description and History of Southern Methodist University
Southern Methodist University (SMU) is a private research university located in the University park of Texas. The University has a satellite campus in Taos Country, New Mexico. Established on the 17th of April, 1911 by the then Methodist Episcopal Church which is currently a part of the United Methodist Church, in partnership with Dallas Civic Leaders.
Despite its religious foundation, the university accepts applications from students of all religious affiliations.
The Southern Methodist University is basically known for its devotedness to global research with a touch of liberal arts tradition. The University is classified as a part of R-2: Doctoral Universities – High Research Activity.
A charter by the Southern demonstration of the Methodist Episcopal Church was what established this university. The Church leaders saw a prime need for a Methodist institution to be established in a Metropolitan area. Robert Stewart Hyer, a one-time president of Southwestern University was appointed to be the first president of the Southern Methodist University.
The General Conference of the Methodist Church decided to support the establishment of the Southern Methodist Church as it was looking for an avenue to do so.
The leaders and local citizens of Dallas had pledged $300,000 to ensure that the university secured its location in Dallas.
In appreciation, when the university established its first building, it was named Dallas Hall. The hall was opened in 1915, the year classes started, and contained not just the entire university but a bank and a barber’s shop as well.
In 2019, the university decided to pull out from the Methodist Church following a series of unresolved differences. In November of the same year, the Southern Methodist university board amended articles of incorporation which they sent to the State of Texas, removing the United Methodist Church’s rights.
Although the Church filed a lawsuit within a month of the amendment and the case dragged through court till 2021, Dallas County Judge ruled in favor of Southern Methodist University in March 2021.
The Southern Methodist University has three campuses. They are:
- Main Campus is located in Highland Park and University Park, in Dallas. Within the confines of this campus, the George W. Bush Presidential Center can be found, located on the Eastern Side.
- Taos Campus, established in the year 1973, is located just outside of Taos, New Mexico.
- Plano Campus is the smallest of all three campuses located in Plano, Texas of Legacy Business Park. This campus was sold by the university in 2019 to a developer and slated that all programs cited there were to be moved to the Main Dallas Campus in the new Gerald J. Ford Research Center by 2020.
