However, before full details of the Grattan Scholarship are disclosed, you need to have a brief introduction to Trinity College Dublin.
Brief Description and History of Trinity College, Dublin
Trinity College Dublin is a well-known college primarily for its top-notch teaching and excellent research.
It is the sole constituent college of the University of Dublin, a research institute located in Ireland, Dublin. The school was established by a charter obtained through the means of letter patents from Queen Elizabeth 1 in the year 1592 and is pegged as the ‘mother of a university.’
It was fashioned after the Collegiate of the University of Oxford and Cambridge, but unlike these universities that were affiliated, Trinity College was the only college ever established.
Trinity College is so related to Oxford and Cambridge that a graduate from Trinity can be conferred the equivalent degree of either Oxford or Cambridge with no additional examination. The same thing goes for the other universities.
This 430-year-old university is a part of the seven ancient universities of Britain and Ireland; and, Ireland’s oldest yet surviving university. The University has some legal incorporations outlined by its founding charter – The Provost, Fellows, Foundation Scholars, and members of the Board.
Trinity College first allowed Catholics to apply for admissions to study in the college in 1793 before the Catholic Emancipation when Trinity College changed.
This was serious to the point that in December 1845 Dennis Caulfield Heron who had been examined thoroughly and declared a scholar of the college based on merit, was not allowed to take his given post because of his Catholic religion.
Even after he, Dennis, was subjected to a hearing by a Trinity College and a court case adjudicated by the Archbishop of Dublin and the Primate of Ireland, the decision was that he would remain excluded from the scholarship.
This was one of the reasons why the Catholic University of Ireland was established, as Trinity College at that time, did not allow non-Anglicans (Presbyterian also fell among the non-exclusive) to be elected to Scholarship or Fellowship, nor could they be made Professors.
Another Milestone the college achieved was the admission of women as full members into the college for the first time in the year 1904. Women from both Cambridge and Oxford came to receive their ad eundem degree from Trinity College from the year 1904 to 1907.
These ladies were known as ‘steamboat ladies.’ In 2021, Linda Doyle was elected as the first female provost since the conception of the school.
In 2005, Trinity College launched the Hamilton Mathematics Institute. The institute is named in honor of Wiliam Rowan Hamilton, and it aims to boost the international profile of Irish mathematics, raise public awareness of mathematics, and support local mathematical research through workshops, conferences, and visitor programs.
Trinity College has been placed highly in Ireland, known to be Ireland’s most prestigious university. A part of this is due to its historical significance.
The main campus of the university is located in the heart of Dublin and has been classified among the most iconic in the world. Because of this, it is a setting for numerous novels, films, and urban legends.
