Large, successful and computer-based companies like Microsoft are always on the prowl for outstanding students in the field of computing and this time, in recognition of the diversity and gender equality movement, Microsoft is offering a female, gender-specific scholarship opportunity for postgraduate students either in Canada or US, to apply for this scholarship.
You know, right now I’m regretting not studying a computer-based subject because not only would you be funded by Microsoft, but you would also be invited to the headquarters for a physical summit!

Value of Microsoft Research Graduate Women’s Scholarship Grants:
Apart from the monetary sponsorship, if you are selected for this scholarship, you would receive an invitation to the PhD Summit which is a two-day workshop in the fall hosted by Microsoft Research where eligible candidates will meet with Microsoft researchers and other top students to share their research.
I should have studied computer engineering, but no worries, as long as I am providing you with this opportunity, I am satisfied.
For the monetary part of this scholarship, The 2021 Microsoft Research Dissertation Grant candidates will receive funding up to USD 25,000 for the academic year 2021-22 to help them complete research as part of their doctoral thesis work.
That is a lot of money. Frankly, this is an opportunity that — if you are eligible— you should not miss.
However, this scholarship covers for just one year and does not extend throughout your year of study.
Plus, it is only for female students in the various fields of computing, so, no men. Whatever course you wish to study, as long as it is under the faculty of computing, you can apply for this scholarship.
Moreover, if you are selected, the award money would be paid directly to your university and you would be given evidence according to the university’s policy.

Eligibility For Microsoft Research Graduate Women’s Scholarship Grants:
Like most giant companies, Microsoft actively seeks to foster greater levels of diversity in our workforce and our pipeline of future researchers.
It believes that education and intellectual ability are not restricted to one gender, therefore inviting all eligible candidates to come forward and apply for this scholarship.
- The candidate must be a female PhD student.
- The candidate must be schooling in a recognised university in either the United States or Canada.
- As this scholarship is majorly for students nearing the end of their education in their various universities, Microsoft has demanded that the students must be in their fourth year or beyond of a PhD program as of the proposal deadline and must have started their PhD in September 2017 or earlier to be considered in their fourth year of the program having taken into account transfers, approved leaves of absence, etc.
- You must be identifying as an African American, Black, Hispanic, Latinx, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, LGBTQI+, and/or person with a disability.

Most of the time, the students that graduate, if they price themselves to be exceptional students can be retained by Microsoft.
However, the main purpose of this opportunity is for students at universities in the United States and Canada, who are underrepresented in the field of computing and pursuing research aligned to the research areas carried out by researchers at Microsoft.

Application Deadline For Microsoft Research Graduate Women’s Scholarship Grants;
The eligible Doctoral students enrolled in their fourth year or beyond of PhD studies and who are underrepresented in the field of computing must submit their proposal directly.
Proposals and letters of recommendation are accepted by Monday, March 22, 2021, at Noon Pacific Daylight Time.
The selected candidates for this award are announced by June 30, 2021.
Just a little side note, as you know, this scholarship is going to be awarded in 2022 and as much as Microsoft hopes to hold the Research Summit in person, candidates should bear in mind that the effects of Microsoft will continue to monitor local and national health and safety guidance and may hold a completely virtual event if advisable.

This scholarship also has strict rules, it can not be postponed however, in a situation of emergency and you require time away for family or medical leave, this will be accommodated.
