Value of the Reagan-Fascell Fellows Scholarship Awards Scholarship:
This is not your regular scholarship award.
It does not specify any particular amount or type of funding but instead offers a five-month fellowships for practitioners to improve strategies and techniques for building democracy abroad and five-month fellowships for scholars to conduct original research for publication.
Also, if selected, you would receive a monthly stipend for living expenses, plus basic health insurance and roundtrip travel to and from Washington, D.C., at the beginning and end of the fellowship period.
Thus scholarship would also aim to cover the cost of a short-term, furnished rental apartment, plus the “cost of living” for food, local transportation, and other necessities.
However, if you need to bring your family with you, you will be expected to cover the costs of their dependents’ roundtrip travel and stay within the United States.
Finally, you are also provided with a fully equipped office, plus a limited budget for long-distance phone calls and professional travel within the United States.
In any country of your choice, you get to engage with counterparts; conduct research and writing; consider best practices and lessons learned, and develop professional relationships within a global network of democracy advocates.
If you do receive this scholarship you should know that you are expected to complete a written product relating to their proposed research project. The project should focus on your research program or another topic relating to the state of democracy in your country.
It’s like studying and investigating your own country to understand the cause of the lack of democracy and how it can be successfully introduced.

About the Reagan-Fascell Fellows Scholarship Award:
This scholarship is funded by the government and it is a scholarship program that offers democracy activists, journalists, civil society leaders, and scholars from around the world the opportunity to spend five months in residence at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), in Washington, D.C., in order to undertake independent research on democracy in a particular country or region.
Yes, in a way, you could call this a research scholarship because it does not really give you funds like other conventional scholarships but rather funds you for the study and research of your country that is not yet ruled by Democracy.
It is a forum for democratic studies internationally, so It is open to international students from any part of the world of the above countries to study at the leading center for the analysis of global democratic developments.
The program has a college environment feel to it. So even though you are not exactly in a conventional postgraduate school, you are provided with a rich intellectual setting for educational exchange and professional development.
Eligibility For Reagan-Fascell Fellows Scholarship Awards :
- You must be from a developing and aspiring democratic country or from a non-democratic country.
- You must submit a research project that related to the democracy situation in your country
- You would also need to demonstrate proficiency in the English language.
- You must be willing and available to work in residence at the International Forum for Democratic Studies in Washington, D.C. during the 5 month fellowship period (October 1-February 28 or March 1-July 31). No other fellowships or jobs may be held at this time.
- You should have substantial practical experience working to promote democracy or human rights in their country of origin or interest t
- Be a mid-career professional
- If you are not a mid-career professional then you should possess a doctorate (a PhD, or academic equivalent) at the time of application
- Present a proven record of publications in their field
- Submit your Letters of recommendation.
- Submit a comprehensive Resume/CV and Biography.
- You must be willing to begin research immediately as you cannot defer this scholarship. If under extreme conditions, you may be considered, otherwise, you would be required to reapply.
How To Apply For Reagan-Fascell Fellows Scholarship Awards:
While applying for this scholarship, there are two ways with totally different means however all done online.
You can either apply through the practitioner or scholarly track.
I would explain each application process in a bit.
- Practitioner Track Application Method:
Now, this scholarship method aims to covet mid-career professionals.
That is, candidates that are already practicing Democratic and political study are required here.
If you are applying through the practitioner track, then it is assumed that you have promoted practical experience and therefore would be expected to have substantial practical experience working to promote democracy or human rights in their country of origin or interest.
It is also required that you have a sizable number of years of work experience in the field of democracy and human rights.
However, there is no age barrier nor specific degree requirements for the practitioner track application method.
Examples of eligible candidates for the practitioner track include human rights advocates, civil society leaders, political party figures, human rights lawyers, parliamentarians, labour union activists, journalists, and other members of the media.
- Scholarly Track Application Method
True, this scholarship is majorly aimed at practitioners however, NED is unwilling to overlook academically adept students.
So distinguished scholars from the United States and other established democracies are also eligible to apply.
If you seek to apply through this method, then you are to demonstrate academic excellence. You should possess a doctorate (a PhD, or academic equivalent) at the time of application, to have published in your field of expertise, and to have developed a detailed research outline for your fellowship project.
Examples of eligible candidates for the scholarly track include college and university professors, analysts at research centers and think tanks, writers, and public intellectuals.
