When it comes to learning, there’s no such thing as too much information. But sometimes, some information can be useless.
I’m not saying education isn’t important, or the lessons you learnt were irrelevant, but come on, how has memorizing states and capitals while in school helped you now as an adult?
That being the case, let’s bring back some memories as we have a look at some other absolutely useless things you were taught in school!
See These 11 Absolutely Useless Things You Were Taught in School!
1. How to Write In Shorthand
I mean, if we’re living in 1860, I would have loved the idea, but I’m sure social media has already given us more ways of shortening words than any shorthand topic from school ever will.
You agree with me, don’t you? I bet you do!
2. Using An Abacus
Unless they knew it was going to be a children’s toy or office decoration, I still don’t know why teachers thought I’d rather be moving balls than simply clicking on a calculator.
Anyway, at least learning to move balls was better than listening to a boring maths teacher.
3. SoH Cah Toa
There are many things you were taught in school that are absolutely useless. One of these is the SoH Cah Toa formula. This is a set of rules that gives you the steps to solve a problem. Unfortunately, these rules are not always useful.
For example, if you are given a problem that has multiple solutions, the SoH Cah Toa formula may give you one of those solutions.
However, there may be other solutions as well. Therefore, using the SoH Cah Toa formula can sometimes be wrong, and even time consuming.

4. How to Write in Italics
First off, in the real world nobody even writes with a pen anymore!
If anyone were to still love writing with a pen, the chances they’ll write in italics are very low.
Afterall, why would I start writing funny with a pen, when I could change my writing fonts to italics if I want to read words written in italics so badly.
5. How To Recite State and Capitals
Unless, this is a requirement to get a job, a passport or a loan which it’s usually not, I see no need why memorizing states and their capitals were taught in school!
6. Species of Dinosaurs
Since we’re not preparing for Dinosaurs’ attack, why would I want to know about scary animals that we’re all glad to have gone extinct?
However, knowing that I could ride on a T-rex to school isn’t such a bad idea, but I’m sure you agree that the species of dinosaurs is one of the absolutely useless things you were taught in school.
7. Shakespearean Poems
“Love is not love when its alteration finds Or bends with the remover to remove: O no! It’s an ever-fixed mark, That looks on Tempest and is never shaken.”
If I send this to my husband while he’s at work, he’ll rather assume that I was hit on the head than think I’m being romantic.
If you’re into literature, I’m sure Shakespearean sonnets and poems were one of the useless things you were taught in school!
8. Pythagoras Theorem
Memorising Pythagoras’ Theorem is also an absolutely useless thing you were taught in school. Pythagoras Theorem is a really simple equation that can be used to calculate the length of a hypotenuse.
However, many people believe that this theorem is actually completely useless and should not be taught in school.
Many experts believe that memorising this equation is not actually very important and can actually be quite frustrating for students.
Quite alright it was frustrating then, and absolutely useless now.
9. Reciting The Periodic table
It’s hard to believe that something as important and fundamental as the periodic table of elements in high school can be so absolutely useless now.
Sure, knowing the order of the elements on a sheet of paper is helpful, but when it comes to actually understanding how these elements work together or what their purposes are, learning the periodic table is little more than a waste of time.
10. Making Potato Batteries
Unless you’re using the knowledge of making potato batteries to help young kids out on their science projects, no doubt this also counts as an absolutely useless thing you were taught in school.
11. Long Division
I was taught how to solve math equations using long Division in grade 7 and ever since through my years in school, the use of long division never came in handy to me.
I’m sure you can relate too,and of course the use of long decisions counts as one of the absolutely useless things that you were taught too.
Conclusion
No doubt, these things highlighted in this article are just a few of the things we were taught in school that were absolutely useless.
They didn’t help us get ahead in life, and they definitely weren’t useful for anything else.
However, they were all useful at that time and made your childhood, and are also making the childhood of this young generation and more to come!
