About the scholarship:
In This program students would test a specific hypothesis that was proposed by Macquarie partner Barron’s newly proposed framework of major transitions in cognition by comparing the cognitive mechanisms of two extensively different taxa, laying the foundation for a structural shift in how animal intelligence is understood.
The program project would be about comparing how animals with very different brains (bees and hummingbirds) solve a very similar navigational problem.
The project will bring together two groups of Ph.D. students with considerable experience in testing each of the two taxa.
This is important because it would be very easy to show the differences between the performance of hummingbirds and bees.
The project program will be managed together with the School of Biology at St Andrew’s and also with the Department of Biological Sciences at Macquarie. The student will be supervised by Susan Healy from St Andrews and also Andrew Barron from Macquarie University
